Shade of Honor: From the Federal Witch Series (Standard of Honor Series Book 1), Taki Drake, T.S. Paul – Review

In Zhanna’s culture, men hire out as mercenaries while women, children, and aged or infirm adults stay home and scrap out a living the best they can. Trying to support herself and her grandmother after the death of her brother, Zhanna must rely on her magical skills, her familiar Dascha, and – most importantly – her honor to survive.

Set in the Federal Witch universe, this series focuses on the Russian mercenary system briefly touched on in the original books. I fell in love immediately. The book grabs your heart in the opening pages and doesn’t let go; and the characters are fascinating. Zhanna grows and develops as time goes on, yet consistently holds onto her concepts of honor and responsibility. Her grandmother has hidden depths which Drake only gradually reveals – I definitely want to know more about this woman! There are a few typos sprinkled throughout, but not enough to distract from the story. Overall, I can’t wait to read more in this series.
